Work at Town Day Two

Today was an interesting day.
It started this morning. Constance- apologies on spelling, who is the person that is in charge of the house I'm living in. She came over this morning to teach me how to use a new piece of equipment that reads bar codes and will give me information about whatever item it is pointed at. I was busy getting ready and learned something very valuable, make your lunch the night before.
So I got to the bus stop at about 9am. The bus is supposed to arrive at 9:15. Today however, I believe the bus driver must have been new because the bus didn't arrive until 9:35, so it was 20 minutes late.
I got to the theater and we were loading pipes that were from the fly system. We took those pipes in a u-haul to the warehouse that the theater owns. Interestingly it is about a block from the theater where the USC football team plays.
While at the warehouse, we loaded two large heavy staircases that are on casters. We're going to use them for Daddy Warbucks' house. One of the staircases had a railing so we had to take part of the staircase off so that it would fit in the truck. Needless to say, that was interesting. I'm glad that we did the moving of the really heavy stuff in the morning.
Once we got back to the theater, we put the staircase back together and we took a break for lunch.
After lunch, we meaning Jill and I were assigned the task of cutting pieces that were going to be used as facing for one of the staircases. The other had facing and we wanted them to match. We had to cut six pieces, so I cut half of them and had Jill cut the other half. After they were cut, it was time to attach them to the staircase. I've done this before so I asked Jill if she wanted to and she told me that she had never screwed something in before. I admit I was confused for a moment until she explained further that she had never helped in the building of sets before, only in the strike (taking the set apart after the last performance). So once I heard that, I had her do all of the screwing in but I was there to give suggestions and help when need-be. I thought that was a good idea, there were only six pieces and four screws per piece, so it wasn't that bad and she seemed to be feeling a sense of accomplishment. It's fun to help her learn this stuff. I remember people teaching me things and I find it fun to share my knowledge.
Once we finished with the staircase, Danny was still gone returning the u-haul so we were bored for a little while until I remembered Jamie (Danny's wife- the scenic artist) mention that she wanted one of the staircases painted. So Jill, Jamie and I painted it. It was fun, and now I can add my orange shirt to my collection of shirts with paint on them.
Once Danny got back, we put up some stringers that would tie our 8x8 platforms together. These things were Heavy. Boy I'm glad that some other guys just-so-happened to drop by for a few minutes. It would have been almost impossible for Jill, Jamie, Danny, and I to do that all by ourselves, who would have screwed it to the platforms?
So once we got those two put on with screws I went through and drilled holes for bolts and helped Jill put bolts in. Then after those were secure, I cut two more 2.4s that would be where the two 4x8 platforms are going to rest. This is complicated I know, I will take pictures, I promise.
But anyway back to the story. I think it's really awesome that Danny is kind of letting me take the lead on projects and doing the things that Jill just doesn't know how to do. I'm very honored to think that someone thinks me competant to do these little projects all by myself. The really gratifying part for me is that I actually know what we can do to fix stuff but still find things that I don't. Like for instance, I learned how to use a belt sander today. Never done that before but I liked it.
That's one of my favorite things about this experience. Yes, I know how to do a lot of stuff, but there are still many many things that I don't know how to do. And the way I've learned to do things isn't the only way. I appreciate getting to see how a project can be done using different techniques.
So no work tomorrow. My parents are coming to visit and bring me stuff I forgot. They were supposed to come Saturday but since they're coming tomorrow, I'll be able to work with Danny then. I've just got to figure out if the bus runs the same on Saturdays as it does during the week.
That's it for now, I'm about to crash as I type this.
Have a good night all.
